Black Hollywood the Negro in Motion Pictures (1975)
Sometimes when I’m searching for vintage books, I come across titles I never knew existed. This book was one of those discoveries.
I was driving through a small town in rural Maryland when I spotted a sign on the highway in bold letters: BOOKS. I immediately pulled over. The shop was tiny, the kind of place that feels frozen in time, complete with a cash register straight out of the 1990s.
Collector tip: these are the best kinds of stores to find the rarest items.
Tucked away in a small section labeled African American was a large book with a bold title:
Black Hollywood: The Negro in Motion Pictures (original 1975 edition).
The book traces the evolution of Black Americans in film from the 1920s through 1975, documenting both the progress and the struggle for representation on screen.
The cover features familiar faces, Cicely Tyson, Paul Robeson, Harry Belafonte, and others, alongside people I didn’t immediately recognize. That’s exactly why books like this matter. They preserve faces, stories, and contributions that might otherwise fade from history.
